At Key Stage 4, students on the Emerald and Forest Pathway have the opportunity to specialise in Animal Care as an option subject.
Emerald Pathway (Optional Route):
Students work towards the Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Animal Care.
Year 10
Students develop a broad understanding of the animal care sector and the responsibilities involved in caring for animals. They learn about animal health and welfare, animal behaviour, accommodation and handling, and the importance of meeting animals' physical and emotional needs. Through practical activities and hands-on experiences, students begin to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required within animal care settings.
Year 11
Students build on their knowledge by exploring how animal welfare needs are assessed and met in a range of environments. They develop their understanding of animal behaviour, enrichment, health monitoring and responsible ownership, while applying their learning through vocationally relevant projects and assessments. Students are encouraged to develop independence, problem-solving skills and an understanding of career pathways within the animal care sector.
Learning throughout the course is practical, engaging and designed to support progression into adulthood, employment, apprenticeships or further education.
