MATHS
Maths Roadmap: Years 7–11
The maths curriculum from Year 7 to Year 11 is designed around a step-by-step developmental approach, ensuring that students build secure understanding over time. Through a structured spiral curriculum, key mathematical concepts are revisited regularly, allowing students to deepen their knowledge, improve fluency, and apply skills with increasing independence and confidence.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)
At Key Stage 3, the focus is on establishing strong foundational skills in number, calculation, measurement, geometry, and data handling. Learning is carefully sequenced so that students progress in small, manageable steps, addressing gaps and consolidating understanding before moving forward.
-
Emerald Pathway:
Students on the Emerald pathway follow an adapted maths curriculum, tailored to meet their individual needs. Concepts are broken down into smaller stages, with a strong emphasis on repetition, visual support, and real-life application. This supports the spiral curriculum model, ensuring students revisit and embed learning over time. -
Forest Pathway:
Provision for Forest pathway students is determined by access and level of challenge. The curriculum is personalised to ensure appropriate stretch while maintaining secure understanding of key mathematical concepts.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)
At Key Stage 4, the curriculum becomes increasingly focused on applying maths in real-life contexts and achieving meaningful qualifications to support students beyond school.
Students continue their step-by-step development, building confidence in areas such as problem-solving, financial literacy, measurement, and interpreting data.
-
Forest Pathway (Year 10–11):
Students on the Forest pathway will follow the International GCSE in Mathematics, completing two examination papers where a calculator is allowed. This provides an appropriate level of academic challenge and supports progression to further study. -
Jade Pathway (Year 10–11):
Students on the Jade pathway will access the Entry Level Certificate in Mathematics. This qualification is essential in meeting the needs of learners by focusing on fundamental mathematical skills and ensuring accessibility, engagement, and success. -
Emerald Pathway (Year 10–11): Functional Skills Accreditation
Students on the Emerald pathway will work towards Functional Skills Mathematics at Level 1 or Level 2.This pathway ensures learning is relevant, applied, and closely aligned to real-life contexts, helping students achieve the best possible outcomes for later life.
- Level 1 supports students in mastering everyday maths skills and building confidence in practical situations.
- Level 2, which is broadly comparable to GCSE standard, prepares students for further education, employment, and independent living.
Summary
This maths roadmap ensures a coherent, inclusive, and personalised learning journey for all students. Through step-by-step skill development, adapted teaching approaches, and appropriate qualification pathways, students are supported to achieve success and develop the mathematical skills necessary for adulthood and future pathways.
