Physical Education (PE) Roadmap: Years 7–11

The PE curriculum from Year 7 to Year 11 is designed to provide a progressive and inclusive pathway, enabling all students to develop physical skills, confidence, and a lifelong engagement in physical activity. Through a step-by-step approach, students build on key skills over time, with opportunities to apply these in a range of sporting contexts.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)

At Key Stage 3, the focus is on developing fundamental movement skills, participation, and enjoyment of sport, ensuring all students can access and benefit from physical activity.

  • Year 7:
In Year 7, students are introduced to a wide range of sports and physical activities. The emphasis is on participation, understanding rules, developing basic techniques, and building confidence in a supportive environment.

  • Years 8–9:
As students progress, learning becomes more structured and skills are developed further according to pathway:

    • Emerald Pathway:
Students follow a broad curriculum, covering a wide range of activities. The focus is on developing basic skills and core movement, enabling students to take part in recreational sport and physical activity. Alongside physical development, there is a strong emphasis on personal skills, including resilience, teamwork, confidence, and leadership.

    • Forest Pathway:
Students experience a more challenging curriculum, with a focus on skill development, tactical awareness, and progression into conditioned and full game situations. They refine techniques, apply strategies, and develop a deeper understanding of gameplay. As with the Emerald pathway, students continue to build key personal attributes such as resilience, teamwork, confidence, and leadership, applying these across different physical activities.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)

At Key Stage 4, students can choose PE as an option, allowing them to further develop their skills and gain recognised qualifications.

  • Emerald and Forest Pathways (Optional Route):
Students may opt to study PE through the BTEC Level 1/2 Award in Sport.

    • Students continue to develop their fitness, practical performance, and understanding of sport.
    • There is a focus on preparing students to participate effectively in physical activities, as well as understanding roles within sport and the importance of health and wellbeing.
  • Jade Pathway:
In Year 10, students on the Jade pathway will work towards the Sports Leaders Award.

    • This provides valuable opportunities for students to develop confidence and independence, particularly through leading and supporting activities for others.
    • The focus is on communication, organisation, and teamwork, supporting both personal development and future participation in community or supported settings.

Summary

The PE roadmap offers a structured, engaging, and inclusive curriculum that supports all students in developing physical competence, personal confidence, and teamwork skills. Through progressive learning, tailored pathways, and meaningful qualifications, students are equipped to lead active, healthy lifestyles and engage positively in sport and physical activity beyond school.
