English Roadmap: Years 7–11

The English curriculum from Year 7 to Year 11 is designed as a step-by-step developmental journey, with reading and oracy at the heart of learning. These core elements support communication, which is a key priority identified in each pupil’s EHCP. The curriculum ensures that students build confidence in expressing themselves, understanding others, and engaging with a wide range of texts.

Through a spiral curriculum model, students revisit key skills such as decoding, comprehension, vocabulary development, speaking, and listening. This allows them to deepen understanding over time and apply their skills across different contexts, supporting both academic progress and everyday communication.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)

At Key Stage 3, students focus on developing fundamental literacy and communication skills. Learning is sequenced carefully to ensure progress in small, achievable steps.

  • Reading: Developing fluency, comprehension, and engagement with a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
  • Oracy: Building confidence in speaking, listening, discussion, and expressing ideas clearly.
  • Writing: Constructing sentences, organising ideas, and adapting writing for different purposes.

Teaching is adapted across pathways to ensure accessibility while maintaining high expectations, with a strong emphasis on communication as a life skill.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)

At Key Stage 4, students continue to build on their reading, writing, and oracy skills, with learning tailored to their pathway and future goals.

  • Jade Pathway:
Students following the Jade pathway will study the Entry Level Certificate in English. This qualification supports the development of essential literacy and communication skills, ensuring accessibility and success for students with more complex needs.

  • Emerald Pathway:
Students on the Emerald pathway will work towards Functional Skills English at Level 1 or Level 2.

    • Level 1 focuses on practical communication skills for everyday situations.
    • Level 2, which is broadly comparable to GCSE standard, prepares students for further education, employment, and independent living.
  • Forest Pathway:
Students on the Forest pathway will follow the GCSE 9–1 English Language 2.0. This provides an appropriate level of academic challenge and develops advanced skills in reading analysis, writing for purpose, and effective communication.

Summary

This English roadmap ensures that all students follow a personalised and inclusive pathway, with communication at its core. Through a structured, step-by-step curriculum and clearly defined qualification routes, students develop the literacy and oracy skills necessary for success in education, employment, and everyday life.
